"Like all battery grips, this unit provides useful additional hand-holds, in both landscape and (especially) portrait orientation. Useful for those with bigger and (nowadays) less nimble hands; as well, of course, as scope for less power anxiety as you can fit two batteries to double the shooting time. The additional weight, while you still have to carry it around, I find gives better lens/body balance in use. It is of typical solid Canon construction, although of course you pay a lot more than for one of the many third party grips. I have always avoided these, unsure of their fit, functional compatibility and in particular robustness. There are the usual buttons aplenty for use in portrait mode and, for me, better distributed: I always find myself struggling to find the camera Quick Control Dial when making eye-level adjustments, as on the EOS R it does not protrude far enough from the body. The equivalent grip button I find easier to locate. A useful feature of which I have no prior experience is the ability to charge the batteries directly in the grip using a (supplied) mains adaptor. Other reviewers have found this to be a mixed blessing - sometimes working, sometimes not. I suspect this may be due to the rather arcane rules for battery charging in this unit. These are explained in detail in the Advanced Users Manual for the EOS R (page 586) but as these manuals are seldom read by users, this may be the source of their frustration. Once the rules are appreciated, in my hands the grip works exactly as specified. And therein lies the rub. Some of the rules for charging batteries in the grip are rather obscure, limiting what combination of what applicable batteries can or cannot be charged together; and the batteries always charge in sequence, not concurrently. This feature does not conform to the usual attention to detail we are used to in the design of most Canon kit. Moreover, the LP-6ENH battery supplied as part of the (otherwise very good) Castle Cameras deal with this grip is one of the ones you can't charge in it. Otherwise, I'm pretty happy using the grip mainly with longer and heavier lenses in my collection as it provides better balance in hand-holding."
