Part of Sigma’s I series range of lenses for full-frame mirrorless cameras, the 90mm F2.8 is a premium compact prime that combines uncompromising image quality, outstanding build quality and a portable form factor.

The lens sports a wide F2.8 aperture, which allows photographers to achieve a shallow depth-of-field and blur-free, hand-held images in low light.

As with Sigma’s other I series lenses, the 90mm F2.8 has a sleek all-metal body with retro styling, and includes a metal focus ring, a metal aperture ring, a metal lens hood, and even a metal lens cap that attaches to the lens magnetically. The lens is essentially designed for photographers and film-makers who value the experience of taking a picture just as much as the quality of the final result.

Perfect for portraits

The 90mm focal length is around the preferred focal length for portraits, because it is generally considered to give the most flattering perspective on the face when standing at the correct distance for a head-and-shoulders composition. The F2.8 aperture delivers a shallow depth-of-field for blurry backgrounds, and the bokeh is smooth and attractive.

High-performance optics

Despite being extremely small and light, the 90mm F2.8 does not compromise on optical quality. Its advanced optical design includes 11 elements in 10 groups, of which 1 is an aspherical element and 5 are made with SLD glass. These help keep the lens compact while greatly reducing the appearance of chromatic aberration around areas of high contrast.

Vignetting is very minimal even wide-open and chromatic aberration is very minimal even in very high contrast areas.

A special Super Multi-Layer coating on the elements helps reduce flare and ghosting for rich, high-contrast results.

Excellent build quality

As with the other optics in the I series range of premium compact primes, the 90mm F2.8 has an all-metal build using precision-cut aluminium parts. Its robust construction and ultra-portable design make it perfect for street, travel, wedding and portrait photography. The lens has a rubber seal around the mount to keep out dust and moisture.

An aperture ring is built in so that users can change aperture using the lens or the camera.

The tactile knurled metal finish used for the lens hood, focus ring and aperture ring make handling the lens and changing settings extremely intuitive. Included with the lens is a magnetic metal lens cap in addition to the regular plastic cap, which further improves ease of use.

Made in Japan

All Sigma cameras and lenses are designed, manufactured and assembled at their sole factory at Aizu in Japan. This domestic production model is unusual in today’s industry, with most imaging companies opting to outsource to other countries to reduce costs. But SIGMA believes that keeping virtually all manufacturing, processing and assembly in Aizu is essential for creating innovative, carefully thought-out and impeccably constructed products that meet the high standards demanded by professional photographers and film-makers around the world.
