The L mount is the result of a collaboration formed between Leica, Panasonic and Sigma.
The system was originally developed by Leica, with the first L mount camera being the Leica T, which was launched back in 2014. It was originally called 'T Mount', but was renamed to 'L Mount' upon the release of the Leica SL. In 2018, at the final Photokina exhibition in Cologne, they were joined by Sigma and Panasonic, who saw their Micro 4/3 system under threat from mobile phones, to manufacture L-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras and lenses in sufficient volume to compete with Sony, Canon and Nikon in the mirrorless camera world.
