Sigma 56mm f1.4 DC DN Contemporary lens for Canon EOS RF-S 

An especially sleek portrait-length prime, the 56mm f/1.4 DC DN is part of Sigma's Contemporary series of lenses.

The lens is characterized by its bright f/1.4 maximum aperture, which suits working in difficult lighting conditions and also offers improved control over depth of field for isolating subjects and working with selective focus techniques.

The optical design utilizes two aspherical elements and one SLD element, which help to reduce both spherical and chromatic aberrations for greater sharpness and clarity. A Super Multi-Layer Coating has also been applied to suppress flare and ghosting in order to achieve more contrast and colour accuracy when working in strong lighting conditions.

Complementing the optics is a stepping AF motor, which suits both photo and video applications due to its quick, precise, and near-silent performance.

To achieve such a compact construction, lens design is considered based on the capabilities of the camera body function to correct (limited to what the camera supports) peripheral light amount and distortion. Moreover, axial colour aberration, which is difficult to eliminate by image processing, is efficiently corrected by incorporating an SLD glass element. A compactness and lightweight construction combined with superb image quality is achieved.

Designed to minimise flare and ghosting

From an early stage in the lens design process, flare and ghosting have been measured to establish an optical design resistant to strong incident light sources such as backlighting. SIGMA’s Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting to help photographers produce sharp and high contrast images even in backlit conditions. The included lens hood can be attached to block out extraneous light, which can have a negative effect on rendering performance.

Rounded diaphragm

The 9-blade rounded diaphragm creates an attractive blur in the out-of-focus areas of the image.
